Resistance is the Core of Self-Sabotage...

One of my favorite books is The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. He is best known for his popular novel and movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance.

 

The War of Art by Steven PressfieldThe War of Art is about resistance and how to overcome it. As Pressfield points out in the opening pages, anytime we take on something that requires growth, improvement or delayed gratification; we are going to feel resistance.

 

Here are some quotes from the book that will give you an idea of what you are up against...

 

"Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard, or smelled. Itís a repelling force. Itís negative. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work."

 

"Resistance arises from within. It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within."

 

"Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work."

 

"Resistance is like the Alien or The Terminator or the shark in Jaws. It cannot be reasoned with. Resistance is implacable, intractable, and indefatigable. Reduce it to a single cell, and that cell will continue to attack."

 

"Resistance is not out to get you personally. It doesnít know who you are and it doesnít care. Resistance is a force of nature. It acts objectively."

 

"Rule of thumb: the more important a call or action is to our soulís evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it."

 

"Weíre wrong if we think weíre the only ones struggling with Resistance. Everyone who has a body experiences Resistance."

 

"Resistance by definition is self-sabotage."

 

"Resistance has no strength of its own. Every once of juice it possess comes from us. We feed it with power by our fear of it. Master the fear and we conquer the Resistance."

 

Pressfield goes on to describe many of the manifestations and variations of this cunning thief pitted against the achievement of our dreams and aspirations. Then he gets to the solution to combating resistance which in two words is: turning pro.

 

"Aspiring artists [or anyone trying to build or grow a financial services practice] defeated by Resistance share one trait. They all think like amateurs. They have not yet turned pro.

 

The moment [one] turns pro is as epochal as the birth of his first child. With one stroke everything changes. I can state absolutely that the term of my life can be divided into two parts: before turning pro, and after."

 

Pressfield does a detailed and entertaining job of describing what it means to turn pro and how to do it. Here are a few samples:

 

"A Professional Acts in the Face of Fear: The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist."

 

"The professional keeps his eye on the donut and not on the hole. He reminds himself it is better to be in the arena, getting stomped by the bull, than to be up in the stands or out in the parking lot."

 

"The ancient Spartans schooled themselves to regard the enemy, any enemy, as nameless and faceless. In other words, they believed that if they did their work, no force on earth could stand against them."

 

"The pro keeps coming on. He beats Resistance at its own game by being even more resolute and even more implacable that it is."

 

There you have it. If you can "fog a mirror," you are going to experience resistance to doing what you have to do to get what you want from life. You could read this book once a year and get a new level of inspiration each time, and itís an quick read. But donít be surprised if you feel some resistance to getting a copy of this powerful book!
