How to Get Out of Your Own Way…

Overcoming your sales call reluctance is much more challenging than you realize. You are up against some of the biggest mental and emotional barriers that exist.

If you seek the advice of people who don’t appear to have call reluctance, they will say things like: “Just dial the phone,” or “Nobody likes to make prospecting calls, you just do it,” or “Just make more calls, your reluctance will go away.”
None of those platitudes help much, if at all. And, “Just do it,” is a good answer and a good strategy. The problem is that people who don’t have call reluctance have no clue what you are going through.

I also like to tell people that there is nothing wrong with you! What is wrong or not working is that you are listening to a part of the brain (ego) that is extremely powerful, hates risk, change, rejection, the unknown, and is afraid of its own shadow! Furthermore, this part of the brain is willing to do literally anything to stop us from taking any action that would cause a change in our current financial situation, including making more money (fear of success). Are you starting to get a sense of the enormity of the problem.

You can learn your way around these mental barriers. That is what I teach in my coaching program. But it takes guidance from someone who has struggled with call reluctance and found a way out of this dilemma. I have spent a major part of my career perfecting this process.

I also like to warn people that breaking through your call reluctance is extremely difficult to do on you own. Of course, anything is possible, but in this case, not likely. You need to have some gentle accountability for a couple of months to help redirect you when you get off track or there will be no long lasting change. The goal is to totally change how you perceive prospecting so you can dial the phone (or however your prospect) with consistency. The only worthwhile approach is to create a permanent fix that deals with the source of the problem so you never have to deal with it again!
This breakthrough is totally achievable. It is not dependent on intelligence or years of experience. Anyone can do it with the right tools. I have taught thousands to break through their resistance to prospecting and enjoy the rush of income that follows. I like to say, “If you can jump into a cold swimming pool, you can do it!” The key is learning to manage the point of risk so that nothing stops you because the cold swimming pool part never completely goes away. And, you can get the sense of risk throttled down to a manageable level.
The reason overcoming fears or resistance to taking action is so hard is because the motivation behind the part of your brain that is putting on the brakes thinks taking any risks is a potential life and death matter. Of course, it is not. There is nothing dangerous about making sales prospecting calls.
But a part of our brain is convinced it is dangerous which creates the problem. You have to learn to discredit that part of the brain for its misinformation and reprogram how you think about prospecting in a whole new way. If someone doesn’t show you how to change those beliefs, you could be stuck for years, even your whole career. That is what happened to me and I lost millions of dollars of income and the interest it would have earned. I conservatively could have made an additional $250,000 per year over the 20 years I struggled with call reluctance. That adds up to $5,000,000 which is a lot of money. Most people with call reluctance are in denial about the amount of money they are losing out on. This is normal, it’s a really big number!

What are the barriers in the way of moving forward...

Simply stated: negative thoughts (fear, doubt, worry). Thoughts like the following:

There are hundreds of thoughts like these. They are a trick of the ego to keep you confused, unclear, and stuck in non-action.

Key questions to answer for yourself...

If you don’t get clear on your answers to the questions above, your powerful, negative, misguided, scared ego will do everything it can to keep you right where you are, forever! The ego hates change!

The same part of your brain that creates call reluctance or prospecting avoidance, is the same part that doesn’t want you to hire me as a coach and break through your ego barriers.

The ego is obsessed with your survival and it is just as obsessed with its own survival. It wants to stay in power. It wants to control your life in the name of survival. The problem is that this means you stay stuck. The ego has no path forward for you! A path forward would involve risk and change. And the ego is on a life and death mission to avoid risk and change at all costs.

You think you can’t afford the coaching program...

You don’t have the money? If you are committed to solving this problem…you can find the money. Some people only look in their checking account. They have lines of credit, but they say they don’t want to go into debt. Or they have money in savings, but don’t want to go into their savings. If you don’t deal with this problem, your lines of credit and savings can disappear anyway. Taking the risk to deal with your call reluctance is a risk. Not dealing with it, will cost you a fortune in both money and sense of well-being!

You resist investing in yourself. This is a fear of the unknown coming from the ego. It creates doubt in your ability so you won’t take any risks. The only way out is to be Unreasonable. Being reasonable keeps you stuck. The ego loves linear logic and uses it against us. It will say things like, “We can deal with this tomorrow.” The problem is tomorrow never comes. Many people remain in denial and kick the can down the road indefinitely and suffer the consequences. Is that you? It doesn’t have to be!

Your spouse doesn’t want to spend the money. He/she says, “Make some money and then do Sid’s program.” Sounds logical and reasonable, but this approach will most likely just keep you stuck. The ego is a powerful enemy. Besides, if you did the coaching program and doubled your income, would your spouse complain? No, but they will complain if you stay where you are! (The key to enrolling your spouse is to let them know you really want to do this program, and most important, that it feels intuitively right to you. Also, it helps to tell your spouse that whatever you spend on this program, you will spend on her and take her on the vacation of her dreams!)

What is your logical excuse for why you can’t afford my coaching program? There is a saying in Richard Bach’s great book Illusions: “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they are yours.” You have to learn to argue for the possibility of your greater success!

You have to get 51% of you more committed to taking action than not taking action. Then things start to work and often in ways that you would not expect. That is the magic of taking a risk that feels right.

The ego is a formidable foe. Trying to learn how to get around your ego can take a long time. It took me decades. If you have that kind of time, you are all set. In forty years of coaching thousands of clients, the two most important skills you can develop are to learn to ignore the negative thoughts coming from your ego, and take action on what feels intuitively right as if your life depended on it.

My words: “Risk and take action on what feels intuitively right. You will then be intuitively guided on how to make your strategy work in ways you would never see until after you take the initial risk.” 

Are you ready to end the madness and have the peace of mind and abundance that is waiting for you? It is sitting right there in front of you, waiting for you to risk taking the first step.

You have to ignore your overly cautious ego, the killer of dreams, and risk taking action on what feels right at the deepest level.

This doesn’t mean you won’t have some fear, doubt, and worry until you break through your call reluctance. What works is to hire a skilled coach (silent partner) and take all your fears, doubts, and worries with you into the process. Risking taking action is a required condition of breakthrough.

The other way I like to say it: I teach people how to do what they need to do in a way that allows them to be their authentic self. Whatever you are doing has to feel right to you or you won’t do it. Based on my forty years of coaching experience, this is the only approach that always works!

When you risk taking action on what feels intuitively right, miracles happen. Even better, miracles can become a regular occurrence if you get good at this approach to sales, prospecting, and life in general!

Remember, there are only two voices in your head. Your ego which is negative and afraid of its own shadow. The other voice is your spirit which speaks to you through your intuition (gut, heart, anything that feels right).  And is the most important part, you spirit is fearless!

The war in our heads that has been going on for thousands of years is the result of the spirit being fearless and the ego being afraid of everything other than coasting (no risk).

Everyone has the power to break through. You have to throw the ego’s caution to the wind and trust you will be intuitively guided to victory!
